Ultrasonic Plastic Welding Process
Ultrasonic plastic welding is a process that uses high-frequency vibrations to join or reform thermoplastics:
  • Prepare the parts
    Place the parts to be joined in a fixture or anvil to ensure proper alignment.
  • Apply Vibrations
    A controller activates a transducer to send high-frequency vibrations through a sonotrode to the parts.
  • Create heat
    The vibrations cause friction at the interface between the parts, generating heat that melts the plastic.
  • Form a bond
    The parts fuse together, and pressure is applied to create a strong bond.
  • Cool and solidify
    After a predetermined time, the ultrasonic energy is stopped, and the parts are held under pressure to cool and solidify.
  • Remove from fixture
    Once the assembly has cooled and solidified, it is removed from the fixture. USW is a fast welding method that can create a strong, permanent bond. It's often used in the food, medical, and packaging industries.

Here are some things to keep in mind when using USW

The best results are achieved when joining parts made from the same resin. Parts made from different resins can be welded if they share a common polymer component. Fillers, minerals, flame retardants, and surface contaminants can affect the quality and strength of the weld. Setting the parameters correctly is important. Over-welding can cause the seal to break, while under-welding can leave the seal incomplete. Variations in the thickness of the materials can affect the quality of the weld.
